YouTube: B+, room to improve

Lets face it, YouTube is a a pretty brilliant site. Not because "it's a pillar of hope within the development community" and not because it allows you to watch procrastinating teens miming to progressive....rock....with those....combed.....hairstyles....instead, it comes down to this: Old people know what YouTube is. (tongue in cheek!)

YouTube has a massive user base, it's not just the attention of us more technically minded people it captured - it has literally taken the media world by storm. It's on the news, it's in classrooms (I've even had it in an RS lesson) and it's evening making audio only appearances on radio! Because of this it offers so much variety in its content there's pretty much something for everything and that's something very few sites do.

So I got thinking, what's actually BAD about YouTube? What is it doing wrong and what needs improving, and this is what I came up with...

5. Stick To One Interface!
I understand the need for change, especially in a site like YouTube but why are there so many video player interfaces? I just loaded a few videos as an experiment from only a couple of users and came across 3 different video players just within that time! - One of which I need to add didn't include the button which lets you maximize the video...

Maybe I'm being a little picky about this but it seems a little annoying to me.

4. A Download Option?
Something I really liked about Google Video was the ability to download videos in a format suitable for the iPod Video and PSP. I liked it because to my own surprise I used it pretty often, especially back in the days of old when I had a PSP. It seemed like something that I wouldn't want if it wasn't there, but would use it if it was.

Having said that, now that YouTube has well and truely wiped the floor with Google Video I've found myself missing the option on the site. Although it's possible to download the FLV and convert it to a more friendly format or use a website like Zamzar it would still be a much nicer experience if the old download button was to make an appearance on YouTube. I'm guessing the numerous copyright issues this presents would be a major roadblock even if this has been thought of, but then again...Google Video has it.

3. Video Quality
There's been a fair bit of speculation recently as to whether YouTube will be entering the streaming High Definition market, whether this is true or not is uncertain however Steve Chen, YouTube's co-founder has been quoted to say that high quality videos will be coming to YouTube within a couple of months. Good news, and a vital update for YouTube considering the video quality available to be recorded by its uploaders and video content available on other streaming video websites.

While YouTube cannot be blamed entirely for video quality, part of it comes from the original video quality, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with YouTube's buffering/video loading times. I'm on a 6mb line and although that's not blisteringly fast in comparison to what some of you may have it's pretty good, and should easily be able to handle YouTube videos. However, at times, YouTube seems very sluggish to me and not always at what I would deem peak times...it's a little disappointing to have to wait for the video to buffer.

2. Video controls
Sites like break.com offer a huge amount of video controls and preferences in comparison to YouTube which is pretty much limited to volume. OK so it's not essential on every video, or maybe even any video but being able to adjust simple settings like brightness and contrast is a nice thing to be able to do especially when watching longer videos or if the video isn't quite what it could be.

1. Profanity Filter Please!
I'm sure most YouTube users are able to handle the odd bit of swearing or so called "flaming" in the comments, but its in EVERY video now. Videos posted about anything remote controversial or popular at the time (Apple/Mac is a good example) get FLOODED with hate comments, swearing and general immaturity from people thinking they're bigger than they are. This happens on all sites but what disappoints me about YouTube is that it doesn't have a profanity filter to at least deter some from posting.

Perhaps it's about maintaining free speech I don't know, but for a website like YouTube which I would class as one aimed at the younger generation to not have even a simple swear filter just seems plain dumb to me. Recent updates have seen the addition of a Digg style rating system which allows you to filter what comments you see by how popular they are and of course there is the option to report as spam but a visit to almost any video will show this isn't working. Why can't a simple swear filter be added, even it was added as optional. I'm intentionally trying to be a prude but I just don't want to read some of the rubbish written by idiots when I'm on Youtube.

So there they are, that's pretty much my top 5 for what I would add to the YouTube to-do list. Hopefully I'm not totally way off what others think either and I'd be very interested to hear what you think so you're welcome as always to leave a comment below!

p.s. Site redesign coming as soon as I find time, probably after AS Level exams now but I'm beginning to really dislike the layout!
